My thoughts  on the short story below my Review Redux

The ever-after, the demonic realm that parallels the human world, is shrinking. If it disappears completely, so does all magic. It’s up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to avert catastrophe and keep life from changing . . . for the worse.

Saving the world isn’t Rachel’s only motivation. There’s also the small fact that she caused the ley line to rip in the first place. That little mistake has made her life forfeit unless she can fix it. It’s also made her more than a few enemies, including the most powerful demon in the ever after—a terrifying entity who eats souls and now has an insatiable appetite for her. He’s already kidnapped her friend and goddaughter to lure her out, and if Rachel doesn’t give herself up soon, they’ll die.

But Rachel has more than a few impressive and frightening skills of her own, and she isn’t going to hand over her soul and her life without one hell of a fight. She’s also got a surprise: elven tycoon Trent Kalamack. With this unlikely ally beside her—a prospect both thrilling and unnerving—she’s going to return to the ever after, kick some demon butt, rescue her loved ones… and prevent an apocalypse before it’s too late. Or, at least that’s the plan… www.kimharrison.net

Review Redux EVER AFTER

I’m a bit late to this party, I am afraid. So, I just finished EVER AFTER tonight. So many people have all ready reviewed this story and I share their resounding cheers.  Kim Harrison does a great job here.  There’s action — of it is violent and malevolent. There’s romance but no sex — sexy without any sexing. There’s a mysterious lack of Ivy for most of the book.  She’s off with a couple with whom she seems to be in a triadic relationship. In fact the people with whom Rachel ordinarily associates and solves problems, cases and crimes with are scant in this story. Most present are Jenks, Trent, Quent and Bis.  Some terribly sad events had me getting out the tissues.

Kim’s Books have a certain rhythm that is like a “magical signature.” There’s a lot of climax and denouement. Poor Rachel usually bears the brunt of trouble, and although there is life changing tragedy within for some Rachel stands to bear responsibility.  Sometimes I thought there would be no way out but then I checked and the letter from the publisher said this was not the last book.  But what kind of umbrella do you need for the kind of shitstorm this woman seems to generate?  Does anything ever go right? It seems like Rachel gets blamed for everything that goes wrong in the universe.  She is the ultimate scapegoat.

I was a bit concerned by Rachel’s rapid emotional recuperation from deep anger and sadness. Time and circumstance compress her feelings for sure, but  it’s pretty rapid recovery.

While frustrating in a Hamilton Ford “THE FUGITIVE” way, it gives Harrison room to take us on a roller coaster ride of climax and denouement.  Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the ley line……

And, will she ever find a nice boy and settle down.  Probably not.  She comes to realize her feelings for a man and he for her, but circumstances keep them apart. )))Sigh((((

I found myself frustrated for a while as Harrison begins the winding up of story lines that heralds the winding down of a series.  My info from the publisher says there are two more books. That feels right for the weight and depth of this story. I hate this feeling; like dear friends moving to a distant planet.  How do you feel about the end of this series, or any favorite series.

For the series, it is a MUST READ.  Shit Stuff does happen in it — big stuff, sad, stuff, wistful stuff.
But if you haven’t read the series EVER AFTER is not the pace to start.  There’s too much backstory. This would be like taking the final before the class began.

Highly readable.  Fairly clean, a bit of language, some violence, no serious sexy times.

Bonus Short Story

This bonus short is filled with two kinds of tension and only one kind of action. Trent and Rachel are in trouble as she is filling in on a security detail for him. As always, they go out on a limb, each for the other.  The two kinds of tension are that hot-for-you destiny kind of sexual tension and the “Oh crap, Someone is trying to kill me again!” kind. The one kind of action prevents the second kind of tension.

Why would Rachel go out of her way for a guy who she knows is a criminal, a guy who has a kid with someone else?  And, why would he go out on a limb for her – she’s deep in “friend” territory, “like’ a little sister to him? Right? He knows she regards him with disdain for his criminal activities.  Just because they share an enormous secret, one that could get them both killed; a secret that bonds them in a way that little else could. They’ve seen each other at their worst, and their best.

Isn’t it obvious they L-O-V-E each other?

I think it is, and it becomes more and more obvious with each book in this soon ending series. And, while they hide the knowledge from each other, at least Rachel can’t hide it from herself. She knows she wants him and is most likely in love with him.

Who would want to kill either one of them — shall we make a list?  Ellasbeth, the Efin-bitch-princess has a multitude of reasons to want him dead, and she despises Rachel for her very existence, for interrupting her wedding to Trent, and for being in his life. She knows where her competition is. The vampire chief kingpin is tired of waiting for Rachel to come up with a way to restore vampire souls, so while killing her isn’t a good idea it might make sense to abduct her. Trent’s driver, who Trent stuck in an animal form to punish him for chasing Rachel — well he’s pretty much been ticked off forever. The list goes on and on. I can’t even say who I would put my money on in a bet.

So, the story is short, but it sets up a lot of questions for the two remaining books in the series. The next book, THE UNDEAD POOL already has an excerpt out: HERE. And TRENT is on the cover! But it isn’t out until February 🙁 in the meantime you can hold yourself over with the paperback of EVER AFTER and this awesome short story available OCTOBER 29!
