“What gives you a thrill Kristen?”
The conclusion to the Surrender Series by Priscilla West.
No one is who they seem to be.
Kristen let Vincent into her heart because he seemed so different from everyone in her conservative world of wealth management. She thought they shared something special, but when she realizes that Vincent has been playing her the entire time, her heart is crushed.
As Kristen’s relationship with Vincent reaches a crisis point, a man from Kristen’s past returns looking for a second chance. Is her ex-boyfriend really looking for redemption or is his goal something more sinister?
Kristen struggles to hold herself together, until she discovers a revelation that will change everything.

It’s going to be hard to talk about this without a spoiler. Because the primary element that stands out for me is the event I cannot reveal.
This series ender is edge of your seat scary — really, I did not know how any of this would end, and it was volatile enough to keep me turning from page to page.
It depends on some technology I don’t know exists in the real world — or if it does the female protagonist is either dumb as a bag of hammers or is trying to sabotage her escape from a domestic violence situation. And, if she has left an abusive boyfriend she has taken up with a controlling man who also has a violent streak.
In this way, the story is complex with no clear winner/loser, good boyfriend/bad boyfriend. That with the suspense is enough to recommend it.
But, seriously, this woman has a Harvard business degree and is in wealth management, if she were handling my money and I knew about her social ineptness I would find a new manager. While it seems she works hard and all, her interactive social skills are bimbo-esque. Oh there’s an excuse for her fuzziness that I have been seeing all too often of late. Let’s call it a deus ex machina with a couple of letters removed and replaced. I don’t think I can blame individual authors with what I am seeing as a trend in book endings. Honestly, I have had the same exact thing that happens here and in at least four other contemporary or paranormal romances I have read in the past two years, happen to at least two friends so maybe it is an actual trend as well as a literary device. And, yes that is vague, but it would be seriously spoilerish to say anymore.
As I said with the first two episodes in the series this is a guilty pleasure. It’s the kind of romance novel you seriously can’t put down. Beautiful Surrender combines elements from pop-culture, like Twilight and Fifty Shades, for more of which we seem to clamor relentlessly, or that publishers think we want: controlling, wealthy men, young, naive women, and that previously mentioned trend. If publishing is a reflection of or window into social issues t seems to be saying more about the stresses placed on young women in a post-feminist world than is probably intentional. In and of itself that makes it interesting to me — the hotness aspects are just gravy.
