Home for the Holidays
Originally appeared in the print anthology The Bite Before Christmas.
‘Tis the season to join Cat and Bones for some holiday cheer in this Night Huntress novella by USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost.
They were looking forward to a normal holiday—at least as “normal” as it gets for vampires Cat and Bones and their otherworldly friends and family. But their yuletide plans are shattered when a mysterious stranger shows up and reveals long-buried secrets that threaten to take a bite out of their holiday cheer … and lives. Harper Collins

A few days ago I received a copy of the final book in the Night Huntress Series – I was excited and a little sad too.
Now, seriously, I can’t keep track of anything these days, what with learning how to wrangle this WordPress stuff and trying to read enough to bring you high quality posts every day, so I completely forgot she put out a novella last fall. On her website Frost explains how HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS influenced her decision to finish up the series one book before her original intent:
Once I’d finished writing Home For The Holidays, however, I realized because it was so long (nearly half a book!) and it contained a major series revelation, I would no longer need to write a ninth Cat and Bones book. The novella took care of that part of my story arc, and so when it came out in late 2011, I told readers that Cat and Bones’s story would now end at book eight.
Of course, they are calling the novella a .5 book as in 6.5 so by that reckoning UP FROM THE GRAVE will be book 7.
Reading that this has a major plot point, I decided I needed to read the novella immediately to prepare for the new and final book releasing on January 28. I know the holidays are over, but this is really independent of the holidays; they do figure into the story but not like a holiday story where you want to sing carols and make cookies.
Are you ready for the end of Cat and Bones? No one wants the series to end, but it is so that’s a moot point. To help at least one other person prepare I am giving away a copy of the book for kindle or nook from the US-Amazon or US-B & N online stores. The rafflecopter form is below the review.
The novella is a great value at $1.99 and offers an excerpt from UP FROM THE GRAVE at the end. Frost is very adept at her craft, and at series crafting as well. No one ties up loose ends, or provides backstory better than she has. I’m aware I am reading backstory but I enjoy it just the same. And her continuity is right on; I’ve never come across a continuity/rules issue in her books.
She’s also been adept at maintaining voice, and in HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS she channels Cat so well, it’s like being right inside her head.
The beginning of the story took me right back to the beginning of the series with the way Cat refers to her guy. And first it seems wrong, but then you realize what’s happening. And, we’ve seen this a few times in the series — a reconnection to its roots. This provides more than world-rules continuity; it brings emotional and psychological continuity to the series.
Now that we’re coming to the end of the series, I’ve got to tell you in my head Bones has always had Malcolm McDowell’s voice with it’s wry working class tones. Cat has a face in my head but it is mostly how the cover model looks. I don’t really see Bones as a person in his entirety; I just get glimpses of him and his gestures. Mostly, I hear his voice (not all the time – just when I read the stories). I will miss that.
The plot here is very, very clever. I don’t want to spoil it so I can’t say too much. Cat shows that she will go to any lengths short for Bones. And, it is a really intriguing plot, very active, lots of negotiation. It is very fast-paced. I always enjoy when Cat and Bones hook up because there’s so much love and passion in it. The banter between Cat, Bones and Ian is great comic relief. The emotional content is so deep; you can feel it.
As always Frost has turned out a high-quality, well-crafted, passionate story. The whole story starts with a nod to the past and some serious twists. They continue through the book and don’t quit until the last page is turned. It is impossible to put down!
I did feel this is setting something up for the next book. I can hardly wait to get my eyes on it!!
