Top Ten Reasons Not to Fall for Kale Norwood

by Claire Ashgrove

10 – He Wields Magic Not Guns – Who cares if magic is the only way to kill demons? He knows how to make ducks change colors, and he probably knows how to turn you into a frog as well. Frogs are far more dangerous.

9 – He Knows the Meaning of A Promise – Promises are meant to be broken. And someone who never breaks his word is only going to create frustration. After all, he’ll have to do whatever he promises.

8 – He’s Intuitive – A man who can read your subtle signs is only destined to do embarrassing things like send flowers, bring home ‘thinking of you gifts’, give you distance when you want it, and know when to hold you close. All those things result in one outcome – no passionate fights over a simple miscommunication. And he just might weasel his way into your heart. Yikes!

7 – He Lacks Commitment Issues – In this day and age, a man without commitment issues must have some rare disease. He’s liable to take sex more seriously, make you part of his life, and treat you like a partner. Which means no crazy guessing games or wondering where you stand. Who wants that sort of tranquility? High drama is so much more enticing!

6 – He’s Intelligent – You don’t need a man who can carry on a conversation. Or someone who can challenge your ideals. Better to simply have one sitting on the shelf who grunts at the appropriate time. After all, “Me Tarzan, You Jane” has a certain undeniable appeal.

5 – He’s Next In Line to Rule – Never mind the wealth and status, everyone knows leadership is way too demanding. Besides, being more or less a princess isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Better to remain a common nobody and sacrifice the awesome shoes.

4 – He’s Loyal To A Fault – That’s right to a fault. ‘Nuff said. This guy would stand by your side if you unwittingly put every one’s lives in danger trying to satisfy some crazy quest to save your lich mother. Booooring.

3 – He’s Strong – Equal rights, baby! Just because he’s capable of carrying you to bed, you’re completely able to manage the task yourself. And you certainly don’t need any man to do your heavy lifting. Or fight off creatures wanting to steal your soul.

2 – He’s Handsome – With dirty-blond hair and piercing blue eyes, he’ll turn heads everywhere he goes—even in his own family! That playground of a body is entirely too much trouble.

1 – He Cooks. Gourmet Style. I mean, do you really want a guy who knows his way around a kitchen?

So there you have it, ten reasons not to fall for Kale. But if you’re still unconvinced, get to know him much better in Before the Storm. It’s available for a short while at only .99 cents. Grab it while it’s cheap!

And here’s an exclusive excerpt from the book!

I slapped the book shut and scowled at Kale. “Is that proof enough for you?”

He grabbed the book out of my hands and tossed it absently on the couch beside him. “You shouldn’t have this.”

Annoyance surfaced. I did not need him acting like my father. “He called the lightning without knowing how. That’s my book, Kale. It’s meant for me.”

“No,” he answered emphatically. “You are not a windwalker.”

“How do you know? What am I then?” I shot to my feet, full of indignation and stared him down, daring him to argue. “Why can’t I control my powers—you know it’s not because of inflection. It’s something else. And the camarilla sent you after me because of it. There’s no other reason they need me when they have you.”

“There’s a hundred reasons they want you, not one of them because anyone thinks you’re a windwalker. God forbid if they did!”

“Why? Why, Kale?”

He covered his face with his hands, his expression tightening with a grimace. “Because they thought I was when I could open this book. It nearly killed me!”

His outburst was enough to stamp out my fury. I froze, blinking dumbfounded. A second later, I managed, “But you can’t read it. I can. How do you know I’m not a windwalker? I feel it, Kale. That book speaks to me.”

He rose to his feet and grabbed me by the shoulders. His face loomed inches from mine. “Because if you are, you will die. I won’t let that happen. I can’t.”

As shock roiled through me, his mouth captured mine, fierce and demanding. There was a desperation to his kiss I didn’t fully understand, but it consumed me, erasing the book and all its meanings from my mind. I fisted my hands in his hair, returning the urgent stroke of his tongue with everything I had.

But that ardent passion knocked me off balance and I stumbled. Kale grabbed for my waist, but his feet tangled with mine, unbalancing me more. We fell, he somehow managing to twist just enough so we didn’t go crashing into the table, but instead toppled onto the couch. I landed with a squeak, he with a grunt.

He broke the kiss long enough to chuckle. His humor faded in a blink, though, and he framed my face between his hands. “I won’t lose you, Halle,” he whispered. “I want you too much to let go.”
