Author TRACY SOLHEIM Cooks Up A Magnolia Bay Holiday

Tracy SolheimGuest Post Section Label 2

I first encountered Tracy earlier this year and I am so glad I did! Her Game On series has provided me with a much better appreciation of locker rooms, athletes, sports. That’s right — sports!

Now she’s part a series from the Tue Publishing Group: SOUTHERN BORN CHRISTMAS and her story takes place in South Carolina – the lowcountry.

After a mission goes terribly wrong, ending in the death of a teammate, Navy SEAL, Drew Lanham, is forced to take a leave from active-duty. Retreating to his godmother’s beach house in coastal Magnolia Bay, Drew plans to spend the three weeks R&R licking his wounds and catching some rays while the nightmares from his failed op fade. The last thing he wants to do is mingle with the locals. What he doesn’t count on is an early morning encounter with a goddess rising from the sea. His interest is piqued and his body put on alert when he finds out that same woman may or may not be after his godmother’s money.

Marine biologist, Jenna Huntley, has been searching her whole life for a place to call home and Magnolia Bay is that place. Unfortunately, she’s underutilizing her education giving tours at the town’s turtle rescue center. With the help of an octogenarian patroness, she maps out a proposal to develop a turtle hatchery on-site. Everything is going as planned until the older woman’s godson arrives. Suddenly, nothing is as it seems and Jenna’s future is hanging in the balance, with a sexy warrior pulling all the strings. Her natural tendency is to help the damaged hero, but she’s sworn off letting military men in her life ever again.

Halloween is around the corner and thus begins the holiday food binging for me. I like to prepare special holiday treats as much as I like to eat them. Each year I make twelve varieties of Christmas cookies that are then delivered to friends. I take it as a compliment when the gift basket comes back a day later with a note requesting refills. My kids, not so much; they like to keep the goodies to themselves.

My holiday novella for Tule publishing, Holiday at Magnolia Bay, is the story of Jenna Huntley, a marine biologist and Drew Lanham, a Navy SEAL. Their story unfolds in a small town just south of Charleston, South Carolina, the home of great southern cuisine. In the novella, the town’s spunky octogenarian, Evie Song, hosts a lowcountry boil. A lowcountry boil is the southeastern coast’s equivalent to a New England clambake. Take the fresh shellfish catch of the day—usually shrimp and some crab—and dump it in a giant pot with some vegetables and sausage, and you’re more than halfway to a giant feast.

Another festive treat during the holidays in the lowcountry is the boat parade. As Christmas approaches in Magnolia Bay, the town is preparing for its annual holiday flotilla. I based this part of the book on the wonderful boat parades you can find in Charleston, Savannah, and pretty much every coastal hamlet throughout the southeastern coast line. It’s so much fun to watch the decorated boats float by, Christmas music blaring and fireworks flying overhead. Although, in Drew and Jenna’s case, there are a few fireworks going off on their boat!

I hope you enjoy Drew and Jenna’s story. As a military brat myself, I love sharing with readers the complexity of life in the military, whether it’s serving in the armed forces or loving someone who’s served. Times are a little crazy right now in our world and I ask that you keep those who serve and their loved ones waiting at home in your hearts.
