Guest Post Section Label 2LOVE ME TO DEATH cover

My guest today is Marissa Clarke who’s written an edgy new book. I haven;t read it through but the excerpt below shows me a raw, fearlessness of expression. She isn’t beating around the bush.

Marissa is inspired by quotes. I am too although I don’t collect them, by the time I found a pen I would have been distracted.

So, I am glad there are folks like Marissa and her daughter who have enough presence of mind to write stuff down!

Here’s a bit about Marissa:

Marissa Clarke lives in Texas, where everything is bigger, especially the mosquitoes.

When not writing, she wrangles her rowdy pack of three teens, husband, and a Cairn Terrier named Annabel, who rules the house (and Marissa’s heart) with an iron paw.  She loves to connect with readers, so follow/friend her on Facebook and Twitter (buttons in the bar above), or shoot her an email from the “Contact” page.

Marissa Clarke is a pseudonym. Her real name is Mary Lindsey and she also writes young adult novels for Penguin USA.

Quotes as Inspiration

by Marissa Clarke

Other people’s words inspire me. I’ve been an avid reader from childhood, and while my friends were collecting dolls or matchbox cars, I was collecting quotes. My daughter has a penchant for this as well, and took to decorating her room by writing quotes from her favorite books and philosophers in Sharpie pens on her wall. The whole room looks like this:

Not as creative, I wrote my favorites in tiny spiral journals. Sadly, most were lost when my parents moved, but my love of short quotes was not. Most of my books, both YA and adult romance, start with a quote from another source. Love Me to Death, my most recent release, is no exception.

When I came up with the Underveil Series premise, I knew I wanted a parallel universe intertwined with that of the human world that contained multiple species of immortal creatures. The fun part was picking which creatures to include. Vampires and shifters were a given. I adore them, but I wanted less familiar beings as well, so I drew on my little book of quotes for inspiration and saw this:

His wings are gray and trailing,
Azrael, Angel of Death,
And yet the souls that Azrael brings
Across the dark and cold,
Look up beneath those folded wings,
And find them lined with gold.

~Robert Gilbert Welsh

Perfect! I knew I wanted Nikolai Itzov to be an immortal law enforcer, but wasn’t sure what he would be until I found this quote. Not really an angel—no wings, halo, or heavenly purpose—but born of the blood of Azrael, the Angel of Death was perfect. And the sentiment of the lines matched my intention as well. Fun fact: Nik’s eyes are gold as a tribute to the work above.

The second book in the Underveil Series centers around the following quote (If you have read Love Me to Death, I bet you can guess which characters the book features!

Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity.

~Henry Van Dyke

Here are some quotes that inspired some of my other novels:

Shattered Souls (YA ghost story):

True love is like ghosts, which everybody talks about and few have seen.

~François, duc de La Rochefoucauld, 1613–1680

Ashes on the Waves (YA Gothic romance based on Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee”)

The death, then, of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world—and equally is it beyond doubt that the lips best suited for such topic are those of a bereaved lover.

~Edgar Allan Poe, from “The Philosophy of Composition,” 1846

Fragile Spirits (YA ghost story)

He died as he had lived, with unmentionable wickedness on his lips—
a sad spectacle of depravity, unwept and unregretted by all!

~Thomas North on Nicaragua Smith from Five Years in Texas, 1871

I’m thrilled Love Me to Death is on the shelves and am grateful to the team at Entangled Publishing for making it possible, as well as the support from and readers and blogs like Fangs, Wands & Fairy Dust.

I’m always looking for inspiration and fantastic quotes to add to my collection, so I’d love to see some of your favorite quotes in the comments!

Here’s a bit about Marissa’s new book:

Love Me To Death

Underveil, #1
by  Marissa Clark
ENTANGLED PUBLISHING/Select Imprint  October 28, 2014
359 pages
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Medical research scientist Elena Arcos has always lived her life under the radar. When she is shot in a convenience store robbery, Elena finds herself rocketed into supernatural insanity courtesy of a sexy immortal law enforcer. He’s convinced she’s some kind of freaky half-vampire thing and that her deceased dad was the real deal: a blood sucking monster. Yeah, right.

Nikolai Itzov never anticipated battling the urge to kiss the offspring of his father’s murderer. As a Slayer, an elite law enforcer descended from Azrael himself, his orders from the Underveil General are clear: Kill her or die.

Nikolai and Elena find themselves in a life and death battle to stop a plot designed to lift the Underveil and enslave humans. With her analytical mind and his centuries of training, they might be able to foil the plot with their lives and maybe their hearts intact. But in order to succeed, he must help her become the very thing he hates the most: an Undead.
