Savannah Dupree is a freshman studying at Boston University on a full scholarship. But academic excellence is only one of her gifts. Savannah possesses something even more remarkable than her quick mind and insatiable curiosity for learning. With a simple touch, she can see an object’s past—a skill that puts her life in danger, when her studies bring her into contact with a centuries-old English sword and the terrible secret hidden within the blade’s history.

In all his three hundred years of living as one of the Breed, vampire warrior Gideon never dreamed he’d see the blade again that spilled his young brothers’ lives ages ago in London. Ever since the boys’ deaths, Gideon’s been on a personal quest to rid the world of Rogue vampires, but now he can’t help wondering if the brutal slaying was something more sinister—an act perpetrated by an unknown enemy. An enemy who is apparently living in hiding somewhere in Boston. There’s one certain way to prove Gideon’s suspicion, but it will mean using innocent, gifted Savannah to help uncover the full truth—a truth that will shatter everything she knows about herself and the world around her. And with danger closing in from all sides, the passion that ignites between Gideon and Savannah will tempt them to risk their hearts and lives for a love that might just last an eternity…

square "my take"I pretty much love anything that comes out of Lara Adrian’s imagination.  Even umpteen books into this series, with a format of vampire finds breed mate, protects her and falls in love Lara finds ways of keeping it fresh. This one is pretty effing intense and sexy.  I think Gideon has always been my favorite Order member; he’s sexy, and he’s a geek!

We haven’t heard a lot about Savannah in other books in this series. I did not know her past, where she was from or anything.  Her gift is really interesting and I have a vague memory of her using it in future books.  She’s smart, scared, sexy and feisty but fits into the 1970s norms and mores for a young full-scholarship student (I was a 1970s college student too).  So, it doesn’t ring false in that regard.

I love the chatter about early computer technology; it sets up Gideon’s order future!  There is a breed character or two I was  not expecting in the story. Lara’s world building is tight, intricate and has remained consistent.

Hillary, whose interpretation of another Midnight Breed series book does a great job here and does a subtle and luscious drawl. It’s not too much, but it suggests the accent Savannah would have. I was slightly less excited about Gideon’s voicing but Gideon has been in the Boston area for a long time and would probably have lost most of his English accent. That’s what I was hearing in Hillary’s interpretation — it’s correct but less exciting.

This is a good, short intro to the series and to audiobooks in general.  The pace is fast and the story is filled with heart-pounding suspense. I really liked the audio and the story!
