#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand-new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire . . .
Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile situation. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.
Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.
Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world. http://hiddenlegacy.ilona-andrews.com/
It’s interesting how one book can put me off a writer or series, but then when I finally read something new I can feel completely different. I had only read one Kate Daniels book, MAGIC BITES by the writing team, Ilona Andrews, back in June of 2010. I have often felt as if I were the only blogger in the universe who didn’t just love the series.
But the publicist convinced me to read this new series and I am so glad I did. They also sent me an extra copy to share with one of you!
I was at first thrown off a bit as a lot of threads are cast. I figured they would come together with a bang and they do. I was immediately drawn to the main female character Nevada Baylor, she is smart, serious, responsible and generally a really good person in an impossible situation. Rock meet hard place.
There’s no waste in the book, and all the characters are interesting whether they serve a purpose or are, in this first book in the series, atmosphere. The technosavants are a little cliche these days, but if you have impossible computer tasks you have to have them. I noted the physical description of one, Bug, whose face is described in such a way I could easily see him as a graphic novel character. Nevada lives with an extended and unconventonal family who doesn’t drive her crazy, much.
I was amazed by how well thought out the world was, how complete. It’s not apocalyptic, since it is an alternate world very much like ours, but not exactly, it’s structure isn’t post-apocalyptic, and there actually is structure that works. But while it isn’t dystopian, there is an imbalance in this world not just of poverty versus wealth, but an additional layer of advantage wrought by magic. The magic comes in different forms: some people are telekinetic, others are pyrokinetic, some can understand and talk to animals. WHAT KIND OF MAGIC WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE?
The world reminded me of the steampunk world of Vampire Empire or the world of The Hollows in the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison. It is neither steampunk nor apocalyptic but rather the territorial boundaries and cultures have shifted. But the relationship that is developing between Mad Rogan and Nevada, who are the primary characters and love interest feels a little like that between Rachel Morgan and Trent Kalamack. Like Rachel with Trent, Nevada knows some of the things Mad Rogan has done, and is deeply troubled by his lack of a moral compass. But she is also drawn to him.
It is intense. And the text feels like there is a real sympathy for users of magic – a understanding of them that is what makes the world feel so complete. For example, Nevada notes how magic users are drawn to gardens, especially flowers. She goes into why a little bit. It’s not a big deal but it helps to make the world more real.
I mentioned that Nevada and Mad Rogan are love interests; it does get steamy without fun on sex; imagine what will happen in the next book.
All in all I was thrilled with the story, and cannot wait until the next book comes out. If you love steamy paranormal romance this is a MUST READ!

- If you knew a potential love interest had done bad stuff, like killed without reason or remorse, but that he had truly reformed, could you be with him/her?
- Nuclear family or extended family all living together? What do you prefer?
- Favorite book and or TV series?
