Narrated with an insouciant nimbleness by Kate Reading (also RUDE AWAKENINGS OF A JANE AUSTEN ADDICT), absolutely loved this book! I even spent about 20 minutes during our anniversary dinner explaining to my husband how unique the plot and the characters were as he overheard part of the story and was confused. It was one of the must unique and original plots I have read in a very long time!
Some of that confusion is lent by a sort of madcap, British comedy aspect — instead of a dozen rats, one woman finds her home has been invaded as part of a plot within the plot, by hundreds of rats. The humor is needed because the story has a definite dark side, what with the crazy, sadistic, criminal and downright evil uncle lurking around making malicious threats. Man, someone needs a restraining order!Good thing the idiotic Lord Vere is really a secret agent, and not an MP with concussive brain damage.
I loved the unique idea of the masquerade by Lord Vere, the revelation of its whys and wherefores, and how it affects his relationship with the ton and his family. That brings us around to the desperate act of entrapment by a woman stuck in a life so horribly wrong that a saint would slit her wrists. What she has a a sort of noble patience and an amazing ability to act.
While I knew the HEA was coming, it was hard to see how all the obstacles would be surmounted to ascend the glorious mountain of true love; especially the emotional hurdles. I didn’t find the title particularly apt. I think the story had a lot more going for it than the few night time encounters of the couple when she wasn;t really his because one or the other of them was usually impaired.
It did make me think about how we treat people who are intellectually challenged, how we treat the mentally ill, and how difficult was lot of women even on the verge of the twentieth century.
Issues: A strange multiple climax, denoument cycle had me feeling some drag on the back end of the story. La La Lah, already! Make amends…… skip ahead and you know we know you’re heading to the HEA, just skip the making explanations to all and sundry.
Otherwise a perfectly delightful and unusual, slightly sexy story with a dark side. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND as either an audio book or a read.
