OUTLANDER Book Series Trivia January Edition

I have been working, or rather, enjoying my way through the entire Outlander Series.  I reread the first book, OUTLANDER and have listened to DRAGONFLY IN AMBER, VOYAGER, DRUMS OF AUTUMN, and THE FIERY CROSS.  I am currently listening to just finished A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES.   Most of the questions come from the THE FIERY CROSS or A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES.

Since the books are 45 to 57 hours long each it takes away from my being able to review as many books, and I know we all enjoy the series and some trivia is a fun way to reconnect with this amazing series.   But since the nature of trivia is questions and answers the entire enterprise is one of SPOILERS. If you will find that an issue. you may want to stop now.

I am constantly amazed by the degree of detail, the depth of research, and, most of the time, the skill of Gabaldon’s writing.  For, no one without skill could create such captivating characters with whom to people a novel.  I want to meet them, be their friends and sometimes be them.

I originally created this with a special system that came with my WP theme. It is not as pretty now because I am getting rid of that theme. Answers are now below the questions.

ANSWERS

#1 “c”

a. Raif
Nope, but it is a dashing name for a dog like Ian’s.

b. Spike
Nuh uh, I wonder if they even named dogs “Spike” back then.

c. ROLLO
That’s right! I always thought it was a rather Latin sounding name for a Scottish boy’s dog.

d. Wolf
Nope, but Ian’s Mohawk name is Wolf’s Brother. Plus that would make Ian “The boy who cried ‘Wolf.'”

#2 “d”

a. Ellsabeth Stewart
Nope, I love the first name though.

b. Prudence McNab
Nope, she is hardly that!

c. Hanneke Viorst

No but she offered Brianna and her bondsmaid shelter in Cross Creek.

d. LIZZIE WEMYSS
Yes!  Lizzie and the Beardsley twins have always had an affinity for each other.

#3  “a”

a. CINCHONA BARK
Yes, this is also known as Jesuit Bark and seems to originate in Peru.

b. An early kind of tonic water made from limes and quinine
No, but quinine is found in Cinchona.

c. Feverfew
This is a good guess because it is also reputed to be a fever reducer.

d. Joe Pye Weed
I have no idea what this is but it is mentioned in a lot of herbals.

#4 “b”

a. She corrects Tom Christie’s Depuytren’s Contracture
No, she wants to, but he insists on Bible verses instead.

b. AN APPENDICITIS: This is correct! Amy McCallum’s son, Aiden, would have died without it.

c. A Cesarean section on one of the McGillivray girls.
No, but she does try to cure one of the men of syphilis with Penicillin.

d. Setting a compound fracture in Lionel Brown’s leg.

No, she did try to help him though after he tried to kill her during Claire’s abduction in which he had a hand.
#5 “a”

a. DUNCAN INNES

Yes. This one time fisherman and ex-Ardsmuir prisoner.  Jamie suggests that he stay at River Run to manage Jocasta’s matters and they end up marrying.

b. Lt. Wolff

Not for lack of trying on his part, but he is a grotesque ass and ends up in a ditch.

c. Farquard Campbell

No.  While he is Jocasta’s “particular” friend and helps her a great deal he is not her beau.

#6 “c”

a. Dr. Fouccault

Nah, I am just making this  up now.

b. Dr. Jonas Salk

Well, if Dr. Salk had even been alive then medicine may have advanced faster but he was a product of the 20th century, so, no.

c.  DR. CHARLES FENTIMAN CORRECT!

Not the worst doctor she has ever met, however Claire’s knowledge of medicine is much greater than his poor collection of misconceptions. He does, however, give her access to the first real syringe she is able to find.

d. Dr. W. Masters

Oh my, No!  The mind boggles at the idea of Claire Fraser and William Masters in the same room outside the twentieth century where they would have been contemporaries.

#7  “a”

a.  ACCIDENTAL HANGING
Yup, in a case of revenge and mistaken identity Governor Tryon mistakenly condemns Roger for inciting the rebellion as one of the regulators without giving him a chance to speak. His own greatxgrandfather turns him in when he finds Roger trying to help his wife.  Roger’s larynx is damaged but he stays alive because his fingers get under the rope and the rope is new. Oh and his mother-in-law performs an tracheotomy on him.

b. He gets nodules on his vocal cords
Well, if “Nodules” were a euphemism for being accidentally hanged, this would work.

c. He is tired of everyone expecting him to be free entertainment.
Well, no. Roger was becoming quite popular and was known as the “Thrush.”

d. Jamie did not like him bringing attention to the family.
Well, I rather think that Jamie liked this about Roger, that he could sing and fostered good feeling around the ridge and in the Scottish community.
