Sunday Post: Payback is a B!+ch

One day in Florida, the next in Maine.

And, I’m back.

And, once again participating THE SUNDAY POST from The Caffeinated Reviewer. I have found this a great way to meet other bloggers and to keep track of what I have going on. I hope you’ll check out THE CAFFEINATED REVIEWER ‘s weekly event – there are so many great blogs participating. Kimba The Sunday Post

You may, or may not have noticed I wasn’t around for a bit.  I needed to go to see my mom in Florida.  The positive side was I got into 85° weather for five days.  When I arrived home, most of the snow was gone, and the finches had donned their vernal attire. When I woke up Thursday morning I found about two inches of snow.  I don’t know what the payback is for, really — being warm? But it sure feels like retribution.

Tuesday I was wearing flip-flops and walking in the surf on Clearwater Beach, and Thursday I am wearing boots and glad I kept my snow tires on the car. After getting up at 4 to fly home, with an hour delay in Newark, it was good to be greeted by my cats who all seemed really glad to have me home.  In fact, three of them are sleeping on me as I write.

And, the usual vacation activities in between: eating too much, drinking too much, shopping, sitting in the sun (wearing sunblock).
But, even though I was out of town, the blog went on,…

Here’s What Happened:

Saturday and Friday offered graphics from the publisher or author, but here’s what I made for the rest of the week:

WEDNESDAY: review of BLACK WIDOW by Jennifer Estep with a giveaway.
THURSDAY:  a tour stop and review of Laura Kaye’s newest HARD TO BE GOOD, and
FRIDAY: I’m So Over It — A new feature exploring book trends that make me roll my eyes

Question MarkI have been having giveaways on the blog each week lately.  It seems that’s the best way to get comments. Sometimes I feel like a movie that gets respected critically but which fails at the box office. Do other bloggers out there feel the same??

I’ve given up the idea of blogging as a business with a profit or even breaking even. My state has made it impossible to be an Amazon, or other, affiliate due to the tax laws they instituted in 2013, and I have never received a penny from Google Ads. I don’t take a lot of advertising, either. I don’t have a lot of time to sell the ads because I am reading, writing and researching.
I do get free books, but they are hard to eat and I can’t pay bills with them.  I don’t resell the ARCs or finished copies I receive.  I pay the shipping on giveaways (usually $2.50 to $4) unless it is a third party giveaway.

I like chatting about books, and being involved in an industry which has provided me with a lifelong passion. But, I don’t think I have ever come near breaking even.  And, it’s not so much that blogging is expensive as finding a balance.  How do you balance an obsessive, involved hobby with life?

Here’s one way I am going to try to find some balance:
