About Hard to Serve

To protect and serve is all Detective Kyler Vance ever wanted to do, so when Internal Affairs investigates him as part of the new police commissioner’s bid to oust corruption, everything is on the line. Which makes meeting a smart, gorgeous submissive at an exclusive play club the perfect distraction…
The director of the city’s hottest art gallery, Mia Breslin’s career is golden. Now if only she could find a man to dominate her nights and set her body—and her heart—on fire. When a scorching scene with a hard-bodied, brooding Dom at Blasphemy promises just that, Mia is lured to serve Kyler again and again.
Then, as their relationship burns hotter, Kyler learns that he’s been dominating the daughter of the hard-ass boss who has it in for him. Now Kyler must choose between life-long duty and forbidden desire before Mia finds another who’s not so hard to serve.

My Take Oblong Shaped

Overall, I enjoyed this story for it’s heat and emotional content, but it got off to a rocky start with Mia’s character not really starting off with depth.  We first see her as someone with a “difficult kink,” and with her motivation for attending a club as “Because nothing else turned her on like being dominated and nothing else got her off like submitting.(location 217 in ARC)”  It felt weird to read Laura BDSM in a club and with it being a serious lifestyle where she’s only toyed with it a little in the Hard Ink series.

This starts a new series for Laura centering around the club where our characters, Mia and Kyler meet.  She works at an art gallery and he is a detective on the Baltimore police department.  In a spin off from Hard Ink, Kyler is under investigation for his role in the Hard Ink shoot out and explosions as he recovers from injuries from the same. His new boss is Mia’s father.

When they meet in the club, Mia tells Kyler she isn’t a masochist, but she gets off on flogging and breath-play (being choked during sex) and that seemed a little contradictory.

On the other hand, Mia and Kyler don’t have any serious personality issues about the dual nature of being “in the closet” to family and some friends on their kink.

But, when the story gets going  on the premise of Kyler not wanting relationships because the job of being a cop always ruins them,  and Mia’s wistful hope that she could have had a relationship with him if he wouldn’t be so freaked out about the cop relationship thing and her dad being his boss, then I could feel for the characters and the problem of falling in love against one’s own wishes.

Usually I don’t like this trope about seeing other relationships fail and therefore the characters’ relationship will too because in most cases the bad relationships as role models are out weighed by good relationships.  But, in this story, none of his role models, or hers, have had lasting relationships so it works.  Also, Kyler is in a lot of situations he cannot control in his job and with having lost his godfather in the shoot out. That would be hard for a Dom who kind of like control.

The kinky hook ups, though, are smoking hot.  And, while Laura has been writing erotic stories for some time, this is a new sub-genre for her.

It’s a little light on the BDSM, and I liked that. I also liked that it didn’t present everyone in the book as super rich and ultra suave. Often, there is so much money at the BDSM club that it is hard to believe all millionaires aren’t seriously into kink. It allows  people into the BDSM universe who wouldn’t be on a  billionaire’s wedding guest list.

If your a fan of lighter BDSM novels then this would be a great choice for a short read, with enough heat that you won’t want anyone under 18 reading over your shoulder.
