The paranormal war that engulfed New Orleans seven years ago is over.  But the battle for the city is just beginning . . .

Claire Connolly is a Sensitive, infected with magic when the Veil that divides humanity from the world beyond fell. Magic can easily consume and destroy a Sensitive, and if Claire’s secret is discovered she’ll be locked into the walled district of Devil’s Isle along with every other Paranormal left in the city.

Bounty hunter Liam Quinn discovered Claire’s secret, but refused to turn her in. Together they saved New Orleans from the resurgence of magic that nearly destroyed it. But now a dangerous cult is on the rise, and it will take both Claire and Liam—and magical allies within Devil’s Isle’s towering walls—to defeat the occult threat before magic corrupts them both…

My Take Oblong Shaped

This book is very timely in its publication. THE SIGHT by Chloe Neill throws certain political events in the USA into relief with blistering sagacity.

That is does so in  a way that is also entertaining is either, or both, a further testament to what politics in this time have become or attests to the skill of the novelist.

When a Urban Fantasy with romantic elements writes a few series with women thrown by circumstance into extremely difficult situations it is almost impossible not to compare them.  Chloe writes one, and now two of my favorite series.  The first series is The Chicagoland Vampire series featuring Merit, a young grad student of means who becomes a vampire and has a fabulous romance with a vampire leader in Chicago.

In this series, Claire, and her dad, owned a store in New Orleans when the paranormal world breaks through from the beyond and begins a war to take over the human world.  After a period of war, the humans in this world manage to close the rift between worlds, but not before a lot of damage has been done. Some paranormals have been marooned on our plane, and some humans were exposed to magic and became supernatural in some way.  Both humans with magic and paranormals stuck here have been imprisoned in a part of New Orleans called Devil’s Isle.

Claire and Merit are similar in their courage and determination but are otherwise  very different kickass heroines.  Their love interests (Merit’s Ethan and Claire’s Liam) are very different too and share that courage, determination and a reluctance to hurt the women with whom they are involved.

Chloe is very good at constructing stories that leave us wanting more.  And this one is no exception.  Claire is certainly rougher around the edges as Merit: her violence is more ingrained from having had to fight for her life and the world.  She may not shoot to kill, but if she has to she will.

I am enjoying this series and had a chance to ask Chloe some questions about it and about her life below:

Interview Label Long

Hi Chloe, thank you for the chance to participate in the online tour for your newest book, THE SIGHT.

Me: I keep seeing established authors paired with newbie or less-known writers as a team for shorter books or short
stories (Evanovich & Goldberg for example). If you were teaming up with any author, living or dead, to write a book who
would that person be and would they be mentor or mentee?

Chloe: Ooh, what a great–and hard–question! I would pick someone completely out of my genre. Carl Hiassen, Nathaniel Philbrick, Erik Larsen, and Donna Tartt are all auto-buys for me, and I think I could learn so much about writing from each of them. I would definitely be the mentee.

Me: In this series which character do you most identify with? Which character, if given voice would identify most with you?

Chloe: My husband thinks my voice is pretty much identical to Merit, which is probably why her voice is so easy for me to write.
I identify with most of my characters in some way, but I do probably relate to Merit most of all. We both went from
graduate school to adventures we hadn’t even realized were possible. And we’re both really, really sarcastic.

Me: How many books do you plan for the series and will the focus stay on Liam and Claire?

Chloe: There are currently three books under contract in the Devil’s Isle series. I’d love to write more, but that  depends entirely on sales! (So go buy THE SIGHT, readers!) As for the rest of it, no spoilers, so no comment!

Me: I was confused by the idea that Liam’s grandmother, Eleanor, is not confined to Devil’s Isle because she can only see magic and not use it. What is the cut off for being sent there?

Chloe: Eleanor isn’t confined to Devil’s Isle because Containment [the government agency that handles everything to do with the paranormals and “The Zone”] doesn’t know she has magic. Containment doesn’t care about the degree of magic, only that you have it. If they knew, she’d be a prisoner like everyone else. The same is true of Claire.

Me: To what degree is the rest of the country/world screwed up by magic or is the issue limited to NOLA?

Chloe: Magic affected every place it touched, so the issues are found every where the war was waged. That’s the area they call the Zone, which covers much of the mid-south. Magic “burned” New Orleans more than most other places in the Zone because Paranormals entered our world near New Orleans.

Me: Thanks so much, Chloe,  I enjoyed the book!

Chloe: Thanks for having me!
