Sela Halstead lost her innocence in a way that no sixteen-year-old should ever have to endure. She’s spent years trying to forget that night, even while wondering about the identities of the monsters who brutalized her—until a telltale tattoo flashes across Sela’s TV screen. The incriminating ink belongs to Jonathon Townsend, the millionaire founder of The Sugar Bowl, a website that matches rich older men with impressionable young women. Obsessed with revenge, Sela infiltrates Townsend’s world, only to come face-to-face with a tantalizing complication: Beckett North, his charismatic business partner.

The tech mastermind behind The Sugar Bowl, Beck always gets what he wants, in business and in bed. And yet, for a man who’s done every dirty thing imaginable, there’s something about the naive, fresh-faced Sela that sparks his hottest fantasies. Because with her, it’s not just about sex. Beck opens up to her in ways he never has with other girls. So why does he get the feeling that she’s hiding something? In a world of pleasure and power, the shocking truth could turn them against each other—or bind them forever.

When push comes to shove, can she trust Beck to do the right thing?

Now that he understands the truth, Beck will stop at nothing to secure the reckoning Sela deserves. But between his desire for her and his disgust for JT, Beck doesn’t exactly have a lot of control over his emotional state. Sela and Beck’s dark, riveting love story reaches its epic conclusion in the final chapter of Sawyer Bennett’s Sugar Bowl trilogy that began with the novels Sugar Daddy and Sugar Rush.

My Take Oblong Shaped

I am doing something rather unusual for me and reviewing all three books in this series in one go.  Th reason behind this is that the series is filled with suspense and the first two novels end in such cliff hangers that I had to immediately listen to the next; and impulse that was deferred, anxiously, until the sequel arrived.

The story is narrated in alternating first person immediate present tense; the narrators do a great job with their own characters and the voicing of the other character during one’s monologue. The books work because Bennett has really gotten the hang of this problematic point of view and tense.

The story is told in a reasonable approximation of what I see as the technology industry and start ups. There is a great deal of conflict in this industry and I have watched the personality conflicts in start-ups result in saner outcomes than this story but I wouldn’t say the conflicts between Beck and his partner JT are unusual.

The concept of the company is a little crazy for today; but women are still treated as commodities even now.

What made the story compelling immediately is the ugliness of what happens to Sela in the prologue of the first book, SUGAR DADDY.  It is visceral and ugly and horrible.
Seeing how it all works out makes it unputdownable.  The relationship between Sela and Beck is as hot as any other on the page but how Sela changes throughout is also an important theme as she faces a quest for vengeance in the face of Beck’s love.

How will the series end?  It doesn’t seem as if there can be any right and just outcome for the series, and I did want to slap Sela upside the head for a bit. And, the ending is not disappointing but the path to the climax was.

When Beck and Sela get together Sela engages in sex without pleasure or emotional attachment. I was a bit unbelieving that one man, one sexual encounter to allow her to engage in her sexual nature with pleasure and emotional connection.

Otherwise I enjoyed the series though I was happiest with the first two books.
