One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennett, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.
In Pride and Prejudice, the Bennett sisters try to find their way in the repressive strictures of 19th-century society. Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and the experience of falling in love, and she superbly describes a world which, despite being more than two centuries old, still resonates with modern concerns.
I rarely review a book I have purchased, and I confess I purchased this reluctantly; after all, how many different versions of P & P can I read, listen to, or watch? Well, I realized recently that my oldest copy of the book was grossly abridged and simplified. This is, I believe, an edition truer to the original text. I loved the details in character development, in plot and in language offered by a less abridged version.
Rosamund Pike is the perfect narractor for this one. She has the right accent to start with, and especially has the ability to voice many characters. Her reading is natural and fluid. And, as an actor, her skill in representing the characters is nothing short of outstanding.
If you love P & P as much as I do, or even tolerate it (like my husband does) then this is definitely for you! It’s close to a must for any Austen fan.
Please note, there is only one link below for the publisher and sales. It is an Audible studios production and exclusive to them, and sadly Jane is long gone.
