Every month is audiobook month here at FW&FD! There’s always something you could be doing while you read a print book, right?  I constantly hear people say they don’t have time to read and so many times Audiobooks could be the solution. So, you don’t want to save audiobooks for just one month a year.

I don’t really do “tours” but I really love audiobooks and was pleased to be asked to participate in this month’s celebration of Audiobooks.  There are 30 bloggers on board so check out the whole crew here https://www.audiopub.org/audiobook-community-for-listeners

FIve years ago, I didn’t really “get” audiobooks. I mean, seriously, what was I supposed to “do” while I listened?  Then I realized that non-left-brain tasks, that is , tasks that don’t require much verbal interaction or reading, were what I could “do” while listening.  And fortunately for me, I have a lot of those non-verbal activities available:  house cleaning, house painting, garden work, crafts, mowing,  art painting, driving, exercising, cooking without a recipe, etc.  I think most of us have this kind of time where we may not have as much time to read a print book or e-book. I even have a waterproof speaker so I can listen in the shower.

When I realized that I could get all this stuff done and “read” I almost entirely switched to audiobook “reading”.

Then I saw a two free credit starting offer with Audible right at the same time WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART’S BLOOD by Diana Gabaldon, came out and we had many yards of mulch delivered.  What happened after that is sort of inconsequential, as WIMOHM was enough to get me hooked on audiobooks for life.

And that starts me on my favorite things in audiobooks,…

FAVORITE SERIES:

Written in MY Own Hearts Blood Banner

I adore Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series in print but with Davina Porter narrating and the fact that their length (40 – 55 hours each)  makes them amazing values for Audible credits makes this my favorite series. I know of no other series that can hold my attention and interest as well as this one.  A 50 hour book  in which I am totally engaged is simply the best escape while I work in the yard or exercise.  Check them out at http://www.dianagabaldon.com/ .

Other favorite audiobook series are:WHITE TRASH ZOMBIE Audible cover
Diana Rowland’s White Trash Zombie series (http://www.dianarowland.com/zombies.html) .  These are great, inventive stories with a second-chance-at-life vibe for the lead character, Angel. The narration, or as I like to call it “narracting” by Allison McLemore is just perfect with her delivery of Angel’s dry, wry, so Southern, and intelligent voice. I also like how McLemore delivers Angel’s father’s character.

ONLY ENCHANTING COVERI love all of Mary Balogh’s series on audio as well.  These are, as far as I can tell, always narrated by Rosalyn Landor whose plummy British accent is just perfect. ( http://www.marybalogh.com/ )

There’s great fun to be had in some “old school” romance as well with Davina Porter’s narration of MC Beaton’s/Marion Chesney’s delightful The Poor Relations series: Start with LADY FORTESCUE STEPS OUT.  And, older even, Georgette Heyer books like THE GRAND SOPHY (Audible Link) and VENETIA (Audible Link) are great fun.

FAVORITE AUTOBIOGRAPHIES/MEMOIRS/ESSAYS

I usually love when authors deliver the narration of their own life’s story. There’s nothing as honest and engaging as hearing someone tell us about their struggles, bad times, and their successes. You can also hear it when someone is fudging the truth, maybe just a little. While that is a less than genuine thing to hear it may be excusable if the author’s story would be too long, or it’s something they are not ready to share, or if it is not their story to tell.

My favorites for the recent past are

BORN TO RUN FIBruce Springsteen’s BORN TO RUN: raw, honest, funny and poetic this one gave me insight and appreciation of his story and his poetic, heartfelt, lived-in lyrics and music. My post: http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/2017/01/bruce.html

Lidia Matticchio Bastianich enchanting enthusiasm and slightly accented English make MY AMERICAN DREAM – A Life of Love, Family, and Food  a joy.  It also makes me appreciate her restaurants and the many culinary endeavors that have come from her and her family after arriving in this country in the 1950s with $25 is proof that hard work, some luck, good people and organizations, and doing what you love can bring you to the pinnacle of success. My Post: http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/2018/03/lidia.html

WHyNotMe_FIMindy Kaling shows her writing chops on TV and in the book I listened to WHY NOT ME. Delightfully, Kaling is neither self-aggrandizing (like her character on THE MINDY PROJECT), nor disparaging towards herself throughout these somewhat linked tales.  I loved how she described meeting President Obama and how lovingly she spoke of her late mother. My post:  http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/2015/10/mindy-kaling.html

3GIRL WITH THE LOWER BACK TATTOO_FII didn’t really appreciate Amy Schumer’s  comedy until I heard her narration of her book THE GIRL WITH THE LOWER BACK TATTOO.  It was so raw, open and honest; it made me laugh, cry and say “hmmm’. What it never caused was an eye-roll of disbelief.  Schumer manages to write comically but not lightly,  about some truly heartbreaking things.  I also learned you can be an outwardly engaged introvert.   My post: http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/2016/09/amy.html

Anything by David Sedaris: Not everybook by Sedaris is equally funny, his narration of his own work is always spectacular. He spares no one, not even himself.  When he writes about hhis family he can be brutal but he is never brutalizing.  I recently reviewed his latest work: CALYPSO (http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/2018/06/calypso.html )

FAVORITE NARRATORS include

Women: Davina Porter, Rosalyn Landor, and Karen White

Men: Shane East (the yummiest and plummiest voice, ever), Richard Armitage and Scott Brick.
