Silver Linings

Publication date Mar 6, 2018
Running time 11 hrs 15 min

I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book. No remuneration was exchanged and all opinions presented herein are my own except as noted.

Successful but shy, Seattle art dealer Mattie Sharpe fell hard for handsome, outspoken, professional adventurer Hugh Abbott. When he broke her heart and returned to his South Sea island home, Mattie vowed she’d only meet him again over her—or better, his—dead body.

When they do meet again, it’s over someone else‘s dead body—and now they’re running for their lives through a tropical paradise. Hugh’s talking fast to make up for his mistake. Mattie’s not listening . . . until his gentle touch ignites a white-hot fusion, and she gives in. But Hugh’s past is catching up with them, and Mattie must stake her very survival on the man she loves—the only man who ever let her down!

If there is a silver lining to a broken heart, Mattie’s about to discover it—when love storms back into her life and sweeps her off her feet!

My Take Oblong Shaped

Until a couple of months ago I had not, in my memory, read/listened to a book by this author.  I listened to one a while ago and could pretty much write the same review as I did for FAMILY MAN (http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/2018/06/family.html).  The book is dated: an anachronistic world where the men are men and even strong, independent women must always be rescued and manipulated, where they give up their successful lives to run off after a guy.  Even in 1991, when the book was originally published, I think the story would have been dated. Hugh, the Maine Love interest  is a caveman and and Mattie is sometimes weak and craves a caveman, and at other times she is strong and her choices were irritating.

The event set-ups are ridiculous with flights to obscure South Sea Islands occurring several times a day.  There’s an aunt with some kind of business that requires shady security and a temperamental, artist-sister with several husbands. I’d love to be able to say the ideas are dated because the novels are so old, but I think the 1960s is the last period this plot and these characters might have worked.

The entire plot could have been updated and made more realistic prior to this new, audio publication.

Could it be read as “Historic;” as an examonation of relationships in our not too distant past?  Yes there are novels, like EMMA by Jane Austen, written in the past that are written in the language of their time and the characters are typical of their period, but this is no EMMA.

The story was not written as an historical romance they way a Regency Romance is written.   This has the feel of an old-fashioned Harlequin romance with a title like  “South Seas Love.”

Sometimes this narrator’s sing-song cadence and the way she voices snobby people added to my lack of  tolerance for this book.  I did like the way she voiced one character, a barfly, ex-mercenary, artist, and salty dog named Silk.

But, that one character’s amusing persona and the way he was represented could not make this outdated book work forr me.
