On the battlefields of the American Revolution, Matthew de Clermont meets Marcus MacNeil, a young surgeon from Massachusetts, during a moment of political awakening when it seems that the world is on the brink of a brighter future. When Matthew offers him a chance at immortality and a new life free from the restraints of his puritanical upbringing, Marcus seizes the opportunity to become a vampire. But his transformation is not an easy one and the ancient traditions and responsibilities of the de Clermont family clash with Marcus’s deeply held beliefs in liberty, equality, and brotherhood.

Fast-forward to contemporary Paris, where Phoebe Taylor–the young employee at Sotheby’s whom Marcus has fallen for–is about to embark on her own journey to immortality. Though the modernized version of the process at first seems uncomplicated, the couple discovers that the challenges facing a human who wishes to be a vampire are no less formidable than they were in the eighteenth century. The shadows that Marcus believed he’d escaped centuries ago may return to haunt them both–forever.

A passionate love story and a fascinating exploration of the power of tradition and the possibilities not just for change but for revolution, Time’s Convert channels the supernatural world-building and slow-burning romance that made the All Souls Trilogy instant bestsellers to illuminate a new and vital moment in history, and a love affair that will bridge centuries.

My Take Oblong Shaped

This book was not long enough; I love this series and have longed for more since I finished the last one in the the trilogy.  I enjoyed this; it  explores Marcus’s  and Matthew’s past in the American Revolution, as well as Phoebe’s and Marcus’s present.  It also looks at Matthew’s and Diana’s life with their twins, Philip and Becca.   I loved the story thread that takes us back to Marcus and Mathew in the Revolution and afterward.  I found the story fascinating and not what I had imagined for Marcus’s past. It did remind me of the later volumes  in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series which take place in the same time period.   It was also fun because it takes place, partially,  in a familiar area in Massachusetts.

I thought the Phoebe and Marcus story line, where Phoebe is embarking on the transition to  vampire. There are a lot of rules and she’s chosen two other characters Matthew’s sister Freya and his colleague, Miriam to shepherd her through the process.  There was a lot in this I thought would certainly be more likely to result in problems rather than protecting her.

To me the most fascinating thread was about the children.  The kids are half witch and half vampire, and they are both strong. Where Diana was slow to develop due to her parents’ intervention, no one knows when or how these two will manifest?  Will they be vampire, witch or both?  Will they be strong like Diana or inherit Matthew’s blood-lust.  It’s making the people in charge a little nervous.

I wished this thread had been developed more, but regardless I wanted to stay in Harkness’s totally engrossing All Souls World.  I love the writing, the characters, the story and the  plots.  They’re intriguing, a little sexy and suspenseful.  I even love the narration; Saskia Maarleveld provides consistent voices and, thank goodness, accents, for the characters, and she doesn’t get in the way of the story.

This is not a stand alone volume though.  I think this is a series that needs to be read in order. But, it needs to be read!
